Come from a place of understanding and compassion. We work with animals of all backgrounds and breeds, so patience is necessary. It’s important to understand why a pet might be misbehaving. Are they stressed or scared? What is their backstory? Are they a rescue? Did something happen to them that made them lose trust in people? Do they have any health issues? Most dogs don’t just misbehave because they want to make your job harder. Most times, they’re trying to tell you something. Instead of working for them, work with them! A lot of times, the best way to gain someone’s trust is through proper communication. Small things like repeating the date and time over the phone when booking an appointment can reduce any missed appointments or no-shows. When checking in a client, it’s important to set their expectations and let them know what you can and can’t do. If a client with a matted dog is expecting a fluffy haircut, it’s important to go over their options and how long it might take. If you exceed their expectations, you will leave them with a good impression. It’s also important for the dog to trust you. This may be as easy as giving them little treats before, during, and after the groom. Or perhaps talking to them in a baby’s voice will help ease their nerves and anxiety. The goal is to gain the trust of the client and their dog. If the owner is relaxed, the dog will know to relax too. 3. Learn from mistakes and don’t dwell or put yourself down No matter how experienced, all groomers make mistakes. If you make a mistake during a groom or have an accident, learn from it. Do you know what that something might be? The Groomer vs. The Pet Owner Various skills, techniques, knowledge, and experience are required to be a professional dog groomer. Basic grooming for the regular pet owner is different from what we do as groomers. Pet owners will avoid doing anything to make their pets feel uncomfortable. Hence why they hate brushing their dogs! Dog groomers do their best to keep the dog comfortable and relaxed but it’s unrealistic to expect all your grooming dogs to be angels. In a professional setting, groomers take charge. Not many people think about becoming a pet groomer at a young age. When you’re in your younger years, it’s hard to think and plan for the future. It’s so much more fun and easy to enjoy life instead of thinking about your retirement. If you think it will be easy to retire at 60, have lots of free time with enough funds, and nothing but good times ahead, you may find yourself disillusioned at the reality. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a good time, but it’s always a good idea to think and plan instead of blindly going through life, going with the flow. You need a clear vision and a concise plan to get where you want to be. Any self-help book can teach you that. I previously mentioned a study where scientists predicted that half of the people’s work will be replaced by AI and be out of work within the next 50 years. However, pet grooming is a complex job that involves handling animals, being creative (a task that AI is still not very good at), and making a lot of decisions or judgments. So I hope that AI and robots will not take over the pet grooming profession in 50 years. 100 Years Life Span – New life strategy I’m going to share another interesting story. I read a book called “The 100 Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity” written by Linda Gratton, and here’s what the author has to say about it: Until now, it was common for people to be educated until the age of about 20, then go out to work for approximately 40 years, and retire at 60. However, since about 25 years ago, the number of people who live to be over 100 years old has been steadily increasing, and statistically, it has been proven that over 50% of people born in 2007 (at present a high school student) will live to be approximately 107 years old. The author argues we should not get caught up in the conventional values and common sense of living based on an 80-year life span. According to Gratton, we need to plan our life strategy based on the premise that we will live to be 100 years old or more, otherwise, we will not lead a happy and fulfilling life. Anyone can easily imagine that it is impossible to subsidize the next 40 years of retirement with the savings and pensions that you earned over 40 years in your prime. Of course, working until one is in their 70s or 80s will be the norm and will be necessary for the future. Therefore, the author advocates investing in intangible assets from a young age to work until your 70s or 80s as a strategy for a 100-year life span. How will you use this information in your career as a pet groomer? After reading this book, it reaffirmed how wonderful it is to be a dog groomer. I’ve been in this profession for over 40 years, and the way I work has changed little from when I first started. The way we do business may change, but I don’t think my work style will have a significant change in the future. If you’re a pet groomer, don’t be afraid to update your skills and knowledge with books, websites, and conferences. Attaining new knowledge and skills can in some ways make your work easier! If you are healthy, it’s easy to work until you’re in your 70s or 80s. Once you’ve established your business, you can work half-days or a few times a week depending on your physical strength. You can delegate the fundamentals to your younger employees and do the finishing work yourself. There are many ways to work comfortably if you have physical strength and stamina. The good thing about this job is that you don’t have to look for a new undesirable job in your 60’s due to financial reasons. The best thing about being a dog groomer is not only the financial reward but also the fact that I genuinely enjoy it! I am appreciated and praised by customers daily. It makes me so happy and makes me want to work even harder. That I get to work with cute dogs every day is also a big reason why this is a fun job. Every day is a new adventure. If I can continue to be a groomer in my senior years, I know I won’t have to worry about boredom or loneliness. Of course, not every pet groomer can work until they are 70 or 80 years old. However, if you love this job and want to stay healthy and work until you are 70 or 80 years old it is something you can work towards. It’s challenging, but not impossible. Just thinking about the fun years ahead makes aging seem less scary and more hopeful.

If you watch grooming videos on YouTube, you’ll see that everyone seems to be having a great time, and it seems like a job that anyone can do after learning in dog grooming schools. This job is indeed fun. However, to be able to do the job to the level of a professional who can satisfy customers, earn a good income, and be able to say, “This job is fun,” you need time and effort to gain experience. The same is true for any job. Depending on your goal, it may take more time than just studying at school. You may expect to become a professional groomer and earn a high income soon after finishing the 10-week program. Some graduates may have this kind of success right away, but it’s best not to have these expectations. If you are looking to make quick, easy money, you will not learn the work required to do this job. People who are only after the money, will get sick of the work and give up if they don’t succeed the first few tries. To become a professional, you need to accumulate experience by grooming a variety of dogs and learning by trial and error. We will be honest with you. There’s a big learning curve. That’s why pet grooming is called a skilled trade. The greatest joy of learning pet grooming If you want to become a hairstylist, it will take you at least three or four years, including an apprenticeship. This is the norm for many other careers in the world. Compared to that, it depends on the person of course, but I feel that pet grooming can bring you closer to being a professional in a shorter period if you put in the effort. The lessons at the dog grooming schools are fun and engaging! But learning new things in the lessons means changing your mindset, behavior, and habits. Let’s be honest, changing yourself is one of the hardest things. The joy of learning pet grooming is, of course, the joy of working with cute and friendly dogs, but for many people, the greatest joy of learning pet grooming is reinventing your lifestyle. It’s a kind of rebirth and a renewed sense of self. People attending pet grooming school We have many young people who come to our school because they don’t know what they want to do, but know that they enjoy working with dogs, so they decide to try grooming and end up loving it! Some people want to change careers for various reasons and become pet groomers. We once had a student who quit her night shift job to become a pet groomer. She used to come home in the morning and go to work in the evening. Although she lived in the same house, she barely had the time to see her children for as long as she was at this job. When she started working as a pet groomer, she could free herself from such a life. We had another student with a sick parent whom she had to take to the hospital frequently, so she wanted a job she could do from home. She now runs a successful grooming business from home. One year, I had about four former nurses who joined my school. You might think that being a nurse is a well-respected and well-paid job, which it is. However, nursing and almost any job in human medicine can be emotionally taxing. Some people want to try a different line of work because they have to be present at many deaths of people whom they have been taking care of for so long, which I’m sure you can imagine is very hard. Others think about this job as a new career for when they retire. People in their senior years are happiest when they have work to do and feel needed by others. It keeps them healthy and active. I once read in a magazine that one of the biggest regrets of retirees is that they wished they had gotten training when they were younger for a career that they could have in retirement. Pet grooming is one of the few jobs out there for retirees because it doesn’t matter how old you are. As long as you have a working body and excellent skills, there are plenty of jobs out there. What makes me feel fortunate being a pet groomer
I have been a pet groomer for over 40 years. I’ve never gotten tired of grooming and have no regrets about having chosen this career.I am close to 70 years old now and still not ready to retire and look forward to going to work every day. Working daily is lots of fun and keeps me energized and keeps me young. Every day I work with a different dog, face new challenges and I do not have time to be bored.After a day of grooming, I still have time, desire, and energy to play tennis (two nights a week), go swimming, take piano lessons, cook, walk my dog or just relax. In the 40 years that I’ve been a professional dog groomer, I have never thought about changing my career and I want to express to you some of the reasons I love what I do. The reasons I love being a pet groomer 1- Working with dogs all day, every day, can challenge; but it can also be stress-free and rewarding. When I think of dogs, I instantly get a smile on my face. The word best associated with dogs is “Happiness”. Dogs are happy animals. They don’t regret the past. Dogs don’t worry about the future. They live in the present. Just seeing them makes me happy and relaxed. Also, they don’t pretend to be happy. They don’t hesitate to show they are happy. They are loving creatures and express themselves using their whole body. I admire them. I fell in love with this work 40 years ago and am still loving it today. 2- I spend my days in the company of “Man’s Best Friend”, the dogs! My job is very rewarding, and I am blessed to be able to have a job I love and have results I am proud of. Every day is different. I am allowed to be creative as a Pet Groomer and can work with the dog owners in deciding which style to give each dog and how to solve any issues a dog might have. Grooming a dog is like painting. The dog is your canvas, the paint and the brushes are your clipper and scissors (the tools). Using your skills and vision, you will have a beautiful painting (the dog) looking their best and something you can be proud of. 3- As a Pet Groomer, I have a blank canvas (dog) that I can work on from beginning to end. After finishing grooming a dog, I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do. Seeing the result of my work (a beautifully groomed dog) puts a smile on my face. I also feel validated when the dog owner is happy with my work. I feel good about my work, the dog feels and looks better; the owner is pleased with the results, everyone is smiling and everyone is happy. This makes me feel that the work I do has meaning, value and is rewarding. 4- The dogs and their owners like me. They give me genuine praise when they see the results of my finished work on their dogs. They come back to me repeatedly. This makes me feel good about my job, my work, my art. All I can say is that I am grateful to the dogs and their owners. I deeply appreciate their patronage. 5- I love this work and have made a career out of it. How many people can say that? How many people are content with their jobs? Pet grooming will not solve the world’s problems or cure a deadly illness. But if I can make a dog feel and look better after grooming, I make pet owner’s life a little easier and put a smile on their face. You may also wonder what is the tough and challenging side of becoming a pet groomer. Some challenges are: Challenging aspect #1 Work by yourself, independently, wherever you work. Working in a multiple-person grooming salon, they will expect you to work with little to no help, relying on your skills and experiences to complete the grooming process from beginning to end. With the proper training. From a certified grooming school, you will be able to accomplish this. A grooming school is where you learn the skills to groom professionally and a grooming salon is where you will earn an income from your learned skills in grooming. In most of pet salons, the commission pays groomers. Groomers in pet salons are very kind and the most helpful people you’ll ever meet. But time is precious and groomers just can’t spare their time (sacrificing their profit-making time) to assist you. They expect you to not only do good work but expect you to work fast and efficiently. They want to keep their customers happy and to have repeat customers and customers ask for you because they are pleased with the grooming you performed on their pets. This is one of the goals of a grooming salon. This is one reason the salon hired you. You are expected to contribute to making the owner and the business successful and grow. Remember, a happy customer is a repeat customer. A repeat customer is a growth for the business. Growth for the business is more hours and money for you. It is a win-win-win for all. Challenging Aspect #3 I hesitate to list this as a challenge because it’s personal. For some people, this is the biggest challenge – wanting to play with the dogs.It’s very, very hard to control the impulse of wanting to play with dogs while in the salon. So many friendly dogs and puppies come into the shop and all they naturally want to do is play.It is tough to say no, but say no, you must. When your child wants to play with you and you’ve got a job to do, you can’t respond to their desires and you have to look the other way. Pretty tough challenges, aren’t they? Can you overcome them? With proper training, you can overcome these and any other challenges you encounter throughout your grooming career. Study aggressively at school and keep learning even once you groomed. Every successful pet groomer is learning something every day.
