“Just Graduated” Newbies Competed Well With The Professional Groomers!
One of our school graduates took part in the Dog Grooming Competition, held by the Ontario Dog Groomers Association. Miss Y. Sawa completed 20 weeks of Professional Dog Grooming Lessons and started working at the pet salon in downtown Toronto only a few months ago. She has “just graduated” from this school. She has no previous grooming work experience. (She came to this grooming school right after finishing high school.) Despite that, she won Second Place in the professional dog grooming competition. Her comment: All the other contestants were very very good. I’ve been just lucky. I met excellent people, and one of my shop customers made this possible. A compassionate customer convinced me to enter the contest and allowed me to use her splendid Bichon Frise, for which I am truly grateful. Thank you for all your assistance. Make The Best of Grooming School: Stay Curious
Over the years, I’ve picked up on common traits among my most successful graduates of our grooming school. It got me thinking… what’s a key trait that most or all of those groomers have? One characteristic that comes to mind is that most of them came to my grooming school lessons with at least two or three questions every day. It’s a given that students should ask questions of their teachers if they don’t understand something, but that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about questions that sprout out of genuine curiosity. Curiosity can not be taught, but it is powerful because it can give you direction. Once in a while, I have a student that comes to grooming school class every day but doesn’t ask any questions. Even if I ask them, they don’t know what kind of questions to ask. They simply take instructions, do the work, and leave right on time. As a teacher, I can easily tell who is passionate and who is not. Curious groomers are passionate groomers. They want to learn everything there is know about technique, the business, and everything else in between. If you’re paying for your course, you have every right to ask any questions on the topic of grooming! Get Used Do These Things Every Day At Grooming School If you are currently a grooming student or intend to take my course in the future, consider making it a goal to ask two to three questions to your instructor every day. You can start by reflecting on the lessons from the previous day. How can you improve? Is there an easier way to do something? Use your daily journal to come up with questions for the next day. The more answers you seek, the more knowledge you will attain.
What makes me feel fortunate being a pet groomer
I have been a pet groomer for over 40 years. I’ve never gotten tired of grooming and have no regrets about having chosen this career.I am close to 70 years old now and still not ready to retire and look forward to going to work every day. Working daily is lots of fun and keeps me energized and keeps me young. Every day I work with a different dog, face new challenges and I do not have time to be bored. After a day of grooming, I still have time, desire, and energy to play tennis (two nights a week), go swimming, take piano lessons, cook, walk my dog or just relax. In the 40 years that I’ve been a professional dog groomer, I have never thought about changing my career and I want to express to you some of the reasons I love what I do. The reasons I love being a pet groomer 1- Working with dogs all day, every day, can challenge; but it can also be stress-free and rewarding. When I think of dogs, I instantly get a smile on my face. The word best associated with dogs is “Happiness”. Dogs are happy animals. They don’t regret the past. Dogs don’t worry about the future. They live in the present. Just seeing them makes me happy and relaxed. Also, they don’t pretend to be happy. They don’t hesitate to show they are happy. They are loving creatures and express themselves using their whole body. I admire them. I fell in love with this work 40 years ago and am still loving it today. 2- I spend my days in the company of “Man’s Best Friend”, the dogs! My job is very rewarding, and I am blessed to be able to have a job I love and have results I am proud of. Every day is different. I am allowed to be creative as a Pet Groomer and can work with the dog owners in deciding which style to give each dog and how to solve any issues a dog might have. Grooming a dog is like painting. The dog is your canvas, the paint and the brushes are your clipper and scissors (the tools). Using your skills and vision, you will have a beautiful painting (the dog) looking their best and something you can be proud of. 3- As a Pet Groomer, I have a blank canvas (dog) that I can work on from beginning to end. After finishing grooming a dog, I feel that I have accomplished what I set out to do. Seeing the result of my work (a beautifully groomed dog) puts a smile on my face. I also feel validated when the dog owner is happy with my work. I feel good about my work, the dog feels and looks better; the owner is pleased with the results, everyone is smiling and everyone is happy. This makes me feel that the work I do has meaning, value and is rewarding. 4- The dogs and their owners like me. They give me genuine praise when they see the results of my finished work on their dogs. They come back to me repeatedly. This makes me feel good about my job, my work, my art. All I can say is that I am grateful to the dogs and their owners. I deeply appreciate their patronage. 5- I love this work and have made a career out of it. How many people can say that? How many people are content with their jobs? Pet grooming will not solve the world’s problems or cure a deadly illness. But if I can make a dog feel and look better after grooming, I make pet owner’s life a little easier and put a smile on their face. Then I have contributed small to making someone’s life more enjoyable and less stressful. Are you dissatisfied with your present career? Are you thinking of making a change? Would you love working with dogs? It is difficult to select the “right” new career for yourself. If you’ve been feeling trapped, bored, frustrated, or unhappy in your current job, it is time to stop pretending that things will get better someday. Think about what you’d like to be doing, do some research, talk to people working in the field you are interested in. Take the small steps to a career that will make you happy. Believe in yourself and so will others. If you are interested in a career as a pet groomer, come visit our school and talk to our staff. Speeding Up Groom: Getting Into The Flow
In the business of grooming, time is money. The average dog groomer will spend about one to two hours grooming a single dog. That may not be possible right away for the novice groomer, but speeding up groom is something to be mindful of when working towards improving your craft. There are many factors that determine how to get faster at dog grooming, but the biggest factor is the skill level of the groomer. If you’re looking for ways to shave some time off of your next grooming session, there are a few things you can do. Today we’re going to go over the basics of how to speed up your next grooming session and keep those dogs coming in at an even pace! Speed Isn’t Everything It may seem counter to this article, but your major goal should not be about speed. In order to be a successful dog groomer, make sure the end result satisfies your clients. If they’re not happy so of their dog’s groom and need it fixed, later on, that’s an inefficient use of time. Rushing through a groom can also cause injuries to the dog. So be sure to keep quality and safety in mind. Speed comes naturally to groomers when they gain confidence in each area of their work. Once you have clarity about technique and execution, those things become easier and take less time to do. For Speeding Up Groom, Set Up A Routine The best way to improve on timing is to have a set routine for every dog that you groom. If you’re someone who likes to do the fundamentals (nail trim, ear cleaning, brush-out) first, this is the first thing you should do when your dog is on the table. It’s also best to decide when to clean up your workspace during the groom. For example, if you pre-clip your dog before the bath, would you clean up your table before or after their bath? What works best for your flow or workspace? We easily wasted time when we’re unsure of what to do next. When you have a routine, you eliminate this problem and your workday goes more smoothly. Be Organized Groomers have so many tools, equipment, and products around the salon. So it’s important to know where everything is at all times. Once you use something, always put it back in its right place. Instead of piling up your clipper blades in a bag or container, find a good organizer at the hardware store. Some grooming equipment stores also sell blade and scissor organizers too. Keeping an accessible and organized workstation is key to grooming. It’s also fun to organize your tools! You’ll find that with the right routine and a little patience, you can have a stress-free grooming experience. If this article has inspired you to improve your grooming regimen or customer service, please let us know! We would love to offer our expert advice on how to maintain healthy animals and happy clients. Let’s make some changes together!
What’s the Tough Aspect of Becoming a Pet Groomer?
Becoming a Pet Groomer You’ve been thinking about the career change. Finding a new career, (a perfect career) is very similar to finding a perfect partner. If you love someone, he (or she) has many wonderful aspects you admire, but the person may also have some shortcomings. Your career choice will be the same. It takes love, patience, time, understanding, and kindness to have a successful personal and/or business relationship. There are many wonderful unique aspects to choosing pet grooming as a career. You may also wonder what is the tough and challenging side of becoming a pet groomer. Some challenges are: Challenging aspect #1 Work by yourself, independently, wherever you work. Working in a multiple-person grooming salon, they will expect you to work with little to no help, relying on your skills and experiences to complete the grooming process from beginning to end. With the proper training. From a certified grooming school, you will be able to accomplish this. A grooming school is where you learn the skills to groom professionally and a grooming salon is where you will earn an income from your learned skills in grooming. In most of pet salons, the commission pays groomers. Groomers in pet salons are very kind and the most helpful people you’ll ever meet. But time is precious and groomers just can’t spare their time (sacrificing their profit-making time) to assist you. You need to handle any task in the salon by yourself before applying for the position of a groomer. Remember the grooming salons are not a school and the staffs are not there to teach you. Challenging aspect #2 Many grooming salons have a hard time finding talented groomers to hire. You will be more hire-able as a certified professional groomer, having completed the grooming course. You don’t need to know everything about pet grooming, but you need to be reliable, knowledgeable, compassionate, and above all professional. The grooming salon’s expectations of you are very high. They expect you to not only do good work but expect you to work fast and efficiently. They want to keep their customers happy and to have repeat customers and customers ask for you because they are pleased with the grooming you performed on their pets. This is one of the goals of a grooming salon. This is one reason the salon hired you. You are expected to contribute to making the owner and the business successful and grow. Remember, a happy customer is a repeat customer. A repeat customer is a growth for the business. Growth for the business is more hours and money for you. It is a win-win-win for all. Challenging Aspect #3 I hesitate to list this as a challenge because it’s personal. For some people, this is the biggest challenge – wanting to play with the dogs. It’s very, very hard to control the impulse of wanting to play with dogs while in the salon. So many friendly dogs and puppies come into the shop and all they naturally want to do is play.It is tough to say no, but say no, you must. When your child wants to play with you and you’ve got a job to do, you can’t respond to their desires and you have to look the other way. Pretty tough challenges, aren’t they? Can you overcome them? With proper training, you can overcome these and any other challenges you encounter throughout your grooming career. Study aggressively at school and keep learning even once you groomed. Every successful pet groomer is learning something every day. Do you still want to pursue a pet grooming career despite its minor tough challenges? If your answer is yes, then you need to contact us today and together we will travel down this path leading you to become the best-trained professional groomer you can be. Thought to ponder… Skilled dog groomers aren’t cheap, but cheap dog groomers aren’t skilled.
